I am a university student currently living in Taiwan. Through traveling around Japan, I love connecting with people, the land, and the authentic ways of life rooted in each region.

This time, I would like to introduce “Yukino-ya Furusawa Residence,” a renovated historic house inn in Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture, which I visited in late July during peak summer. With over 150 years of history, this house was brought back to life through the passion of the owner, Mr. Ibi, and his deep connection with the local community. It was a place where I could truly experience “traveling as if living there.”

Tokamachi, Niigata | Renovated Kominka Inn “Yukino-ya”

Tokamachi City in Niigata Prefecture is one of Japan’s most snow-heavy regions. I visited in late July amidst stifling midsummer heat. Even in a season without snow, the presence of “life in snow country” was distinctly felt.

“Yukino-ya” (House of Snow) is a renovated 150-year-old traditional home. In the dining room featuring traces of an irori (sunken hearth), he spent 30 minutes carefully explaining the house rules and its history. Spending time at this exclusive inn felt less like a simple hotel stay and more like genuine daily living.

Neither my friend nor I grew up around heavy snow, so we were amazed to discover how “wisdom for living with snow” was embedded throughout Yukino-ya, even in midsummer. Learning that it is traditionally used to make high-end toothpicks for Japanese sweets made total sense given its gentle, soothing fragrance.

In this area, if you are lucky, you might also come across wild fruits like Kokuwa (a nutrient-rich wild fruit similar to kiwi) or Ishi-nashi (wild stone pear). Having hands-on opportunities to touch and taste things directly during a hike makes the travel experience so much richer.

There were also several trees along the path with trunks bent at sharp angles. Shaped by heavy winter snowfall, their unique forms looked like artwork sculpted by nature itself, each holding its own distinct personality.

I also got to touch a plant called Karamushi (ramie). This is the raw material for Echigo-jofu, a top-tier traditional textile known for its light, crisp texture. Echigo-jofu was historically passed down through generations as winter handiwork by local women who could not leave their homes during heavy snows. Together with Ojiya-chijimi, it is designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan and registered on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Standing in this satoyama (developed borderland between natural wilderness and arable flat land), I truly felt the living continuity of human wisdom intertwined with nature.

When we reached a virgin beech forest, we paused to listen to Mr. Ibi share insights about the satoyama ecosystem. What impressed me most was learning why a virgin beech forest exists at such a low altitude. Beech trees normally grow at much higher elevations, but because of the extreme snowfall in this region, the trees were essentially “tricked” by the environment into growing here.

When beech leaves fall, they decay into rich humus that acts like a massive sponge, absorbing rainwater and slowly releasing it into the ground. This nurtures the underground water system and plays a vital role in sustaining local agriculture and ecology. Realizing how quietly and profoundly these trees support local life from beneath the surface filled me with deep respect.

[Discovering the Harmony of Nature and Human Life: Spectacular Views of Hoshitoge Rice Terraces]

As we steadily hiked up the mountain path, we reached the summit of a small mountain called Mount Yakushi. However, the local villagers who have maintained it are aging, and many express that it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep up.”

While large crowds visit during the spring “water mirror” season to admire the views, the heavy burden of landscape maintenance and farm labor falls entirely on local shoulders. Behind the “free scenic beauty” lies the community’s quiet effort and struggle. It made us think deeply about how visitors can meaningfully engage rather than just consume the view. Knowing that a portion of the tour fee is donated to the village to help preserve the rice terraces was a comforting way to give back even a little.

[Summary | Tokamachi Rice Terrace Trekking]

The entire journey took about 3.5 hours. It was by no means a short walk, but every step was filled with stories woven by nature and human life. And in winter, under a thick blanket of snow, the terraces transform into a serene, solemn world of white.
