During the Edo period, Yoshii flourished as a post station on the Bungo Kaido, a major route connecting the Kurume Castle town of the Arima Domain with the shogunate-controlled town of Hita. Even after the Meiji era began, the town prospered through industries such as wood wax production and sake brewing, and merchants accumulated wealth through a unique local financial system known as “Yoshii Gin.”

After experiencing three major fires by the early Meiji period, the town rebuilt itself using fire-resistant construction. Tile-roofed merchant houses with thick white plaster walls and earthen storehouse-style architecture were built, many of which still remain today. Approximately 250 traditional buildings have been preserved in their original form, and the area is now designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the Japanese government.

In spring, the town becomes lively during the “Chikugo Yoshii Hina Doll Festival”, when traditional hina dolls are displayed inside white-walled townhouses. Many visitors come to enjoy the colorful contrast between the historic streetscape and the elegant dolls.

Highlights

The white-walled townscape is lined with solid plastered merchant residences that convey a sense of dignity and history. Former merchant houses stand side by side, many featuring kura-style structures with white plaster extending up to the eaves. As you stroll through the streets, you can spot kote-e (decorative plaster reliefs) on exterior walls, depicting smiling Ebisu, cranes, turtles, rabbits, and other auspicious motifs.

One must-see site is Ikura no Yakata (Former Matsuda Residence). Built in the late Meiji period, this grand kura-style mansion once served as both a residence and shop for a wealthy merchant who made his fortune in the wax industry. Visitors can view its luxurious features up close, including a large open-ceiling tatami room, a bathroom with a domed ceiling, and iron doors on the second floor, as well as a spacious garden.Other notable spots include the Machinami Koryukan Shoka, a former dried-goods wholesaler with over 300 years of history, and Kagamida Residence, known for its charming waterways. Together, these sites convey the dignity and character of a former castle town.

During the spring Hina Doll Festival, traditional displays such as box hina and standing hina dolls decorate storefronts and private homes, adding vibrant color to the white-walled streets.

Recommended Ways to Spend Your Time

Along Shirakabe Street on the former Bungo Kaido and the narrow alleys beside waterways, there are no utility poles, helping preserve the historic scenery. Walking along the stone-paved roads, you can look up at traditional townhouses, enjoy the greenery of private gardens, and spend time at a relaxed pace in a calm, atmospheric setting.

The area is also dotted with cafés, sweets shops, and antique stores housed in renovated townhouses. Visitors can enjoy local desserts and regional sweets, as well as seasonal fruits from nearby farms—such as strawberries in spring and grapes or persimmons in autumn.

Yoshii Tourist Information Center “Kura” serves as a convenient base for exploring the town. It offers guided walking tours, bicycle rentals, and tourist maps in multiple languages, including English, Chinese, and Korean. The center also houses the Ukipii Shop, selling goods featuring Ukiha’s mascot character, as well as a café run by the popular dorayaki shop Qui-ti-co-co.

The building The Chikugo Yoshii White-Walled Townscape is a historic area in Yoshii Town, Ukiha City, Fukuoka Prefecture, where the atmosphere of a traditional post town has been carefully preserved. During the Edo period, Yoshii flourished as a post station on the Bungo Kaido, a major route connecting the Kurume Castle town of the Arima Domain with the shogunate-controlled town of Hita. Even after the Meiji era began, the town prospered through industries such as wood wax production and sake brewing, and merchants accumulated wealth through a unique local financial system known as “Yoshii Gin.” After experiencing three major fires by the early Meiji period, the town rebuilt itself using fire-resistant construction. Tile-roofed merchant houses with thick white plaster walls and earthen storehouse-style architecture were built, many of which still remain today. Approximately 250 traditional buildings have been preserved in their original form

[121

141

post-2954","spot","type-spot","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","area-ukiha","ryokan_tag-ukiha
["GET
