Opened in November 2018, it has quickly become a new icon for Nihondaira, an area long celebrated as one of Japan’s most scenic spots. The highlight is without a doubt the view. On a clear day, you get a full 360-degree panorama with the legendary Mount Fuji standing right in front of you. Seeing it tower over the blue waters of Suruga Bay and the pine groves of Miho no Matsubara is incredible. The building features a symbolic octagonal design reminiscent of the Yumedono (Hall of Dreams) at Horyu-ji Temple, and it is built using an abundance of local Shizuoka cypress and cedar.

As soon as you step inside, you are wrapped in the gentle scent and warmth of the wood. The intricately assembled timber ceiling is a work of art in itself. The structure is designed to melt into the rich natural surroundings, allowing you to appreciate the beauty of the architecture just as much as the view outside.

Recommended Ways to Spend Your Time

The facility has three floors, and it is best to start at the Exhibition Area on the 1st floor. Here, you can learn about the history and origins of Nihondaira through projection mapping and graphic panels, including the local myths of Yamato Takeru no Mikoto.

After exploring the history, head straight to the Observation Floor on the 3rd floor. The glass-walled space offers a grand view of Mount Fuji. Step outside onto the Observation Corridor, a 200 meter outdoor walkway where you can enjoy an aerial stroll in the breeze and find the perfect angle for your photos.

Once you’ve taken in the sights, head down to the 2nd floor Lounge. You can relax on a sofa and enjoy Shizuoka tea, local sweets, or ochazuke (tea-soaked rice) while gazing at the scenery through the windows. It’s the perfect spot for a peaceful tea break. On Saturdays, the terrace stays open until 20:00. This is the best time to see Mount Fuji glowing red at sunset or the “jewel-like” night views of Shizuoka City and Shimizu Port, which are officially recognized as a Japan Night View Heritage site. Since the ropeway to Kunozan Toshogu Shrine is right nearby, you can easily combine the two for a full day of Shizuoka’s history and nature.

 <div
