What Is Sunpu no Kobo Takumishuku?

Sunpu no Kobo Takumishuku is one of Japan’s largest traditional craft centers, located in the Mariko area of Shizuoka City’s Suruga Ward. It is situated in a lush, historic village that once flourished as a post station on the Old Tokaido Road. The area was even featured in ukiyo-e prints by the celebrated artist Utagawa Hiroshige.While the facility originally opened in 1999, it underwent a major renewal in 2021 based on the concept of Connecting History and the Future. Many people from both inside and outside the prefecture visit to see, touch, and experience Shizuoka’s diverse heritage, including the famous Suruga Bamboo Sensuji-zaiku (delicate bamboo latticework), indigo dyeing, woodworking, lacquerware, and ceramics.

The standout feature of the updated Takumishuku is its sophisticated design. As you pass through the entrance, you are greeted by an open courtyard where a refreshing breeze blows in from the surrounding mountains, making you want to stop and take a deep breath.
The grounds are home to various craft workshops, allowing you to watch master artisans at work up close. While it honors traditional techniques and culture, the entire facility has a modern, immersive feel that makes you feel like you are wandering through a beautiful museum or a boutique gallery.

To get there, it is about a 30-minute bus ride or a 15-minute drive from JR Shizuoka Station. It is far enough from the city center to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the countryside, and best of all, both admission and parking are free.
Once you arrive, you should definitely try a hands-on workshop. The studios are organized into themes like Bamboo & Dyeing, Wood & Lacquer, and Fire & Clay, with plenty of activities for both children and adults. The Tea Dyeing experience features Shizuoka tea leaves that fall outside standard market grades. The model-making workshop supervised by Tamiya, the world-famous local model manufacturer, is a unique memory you can only make here. You can take your one-of-a-kind creation home on the very same day.
After your workshop, head to the select shop Gallery Teto Teto to browse souvenirs made by local creators. These traditional crafts have been reimagined to fit a modern lifestyle, making them perfect as gifts or a treat for yourself.The food options are also excellent. At the cafe HACHI & MITSU, you can enjoy original drinks and lunch made with local Mariko honey, and the terrace seats are dog-friendly. You will also find Tokiya, which carries on the flavors of a famous kintsuba (sweet bean) shop, a coffee roastery, and the SHIZUOKA BREWING facility mentioned in the previous article. There is more than enough to keep you busy all day.
