Kiyotsu Gorge
Fantasy Space Created by a Tunnel of Light
Kiyotsu Gorge is one of Japan’s three great gorges, known for its dramatic V-shaped cliffs and striking columnar rock formations.
It developed as a hot spring area in 1862 and was designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument in 1941.
Today, the 750-meter Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel transforms the site into a surreal space where nature and art come together.
Hoshitoge Rice Terraces
Terraced Rice Fields Enveloped in a Mystical Water Mirror and Sea of Clouds.
Hoshitoge Rice Terraces are located in the hilly Matsudai area, featuring around 200 rice paddies spread across the slopes like shimmering fish scales.
For over 300 years, local farmers have preserved these terraces in harmony with the region’s heavy snowfall, earning recognition as part of Japan’s “Tsunagu Tanada Heritage” in 2022. Among Tokamachi’s many terraced fields, Hoshitoge is especially beloved and is listed among the “100 Beautiful Villages of Japan.”
Setsuryō-an
A gallery and cafe run by sculptor Noboru Kawanaka.

Located about 10–15 minutes from Kiyotsu Gorge, the traditional house is built to withstand heavy snowfall and surrounded by deep greenery.
Originally from Hyogo, Kawanaka moved here for the snowy landscape and transformed the space into a gallery café about four years ago.
