Shimameshiya Hokuto
Kasumaki: A celebratory sweet passed down in Tsushima since the Edo period.
Locally caught Tsushima specialty, Golden Conger Eel.

Anago-tei is a conger eel specialty restaurant located in Toyotama-machi, Tsushima City, Nagasaki Prefecture, where visitors can enjoy Tsushima’s local specialty, Kogane Anago (Golden Conger Eel). Serving freshly caught conger eel from the western waters of Tsushima that is instantly processed on-site to maintain quality, the restaurant attracts food lovers from across Japan. Located in Nii, an area in the central part of Tsushima surrounded by nature, the restaurant is directly operated by a local marine processing company. This connection allows it to serve high-quality conger eel dishes in a relaxed, Japanese-style dining space, making it a popular lunch spot for travelers exploring Tsushima.
The biggest highlight of the restaurant is the quality of its Kogane Anago, a high-grade conger eel. Caught in the deep waters near the border with South Korea, these eels are thick and rich in natural oils. Because they are processed quickly after being landed, the meat lacks the muddy odor often associated with conger eel, and the bones are soft enough to eat. The menu features a variety of preparations, including classic simmered conger eel, rare conger eel sashimi that relies on absolute freshness, and thick, crispy conger eel katsu. The meat lacks the dryness found in lesser-quality eel, offering a soft texture that melts quickly in the mouth.
Unlike typical conger eel, it isn’t dry at all. It melts in your mouth the moment you take a bite, offering such an incredible texture that it may completely change your idea of what anago can be.
The restaurant is a 35-minute drive north from Tsushima Airport along Route 382.
Once inside, visitors typically choose from the set menus featuring various conger eel preparations. The most popular item is the Tokujo Seiro (Medium), which features soft, simmered conger eel served over rice with a savory sauce. Another option is the Nigiri Sushi Set, available in limited quantities, which allows diners to try both the rare sashimi and the simmered eel at the same time. Ordering side dishes like grilled (Shirayaki) or tempura conger eel is a common way to compare the different cooking styles.
The restaurant also sells frozen conger eel rice bowls and conger eel katsu to take home. Lunch is served from Friday through Monday starting at 11:30 AM, while dinner is available by reservation only, making it a practical stop during a daytime drive around the island. Because it is a well-known spot that often sees lines, arriving close to opening time is recommended to minimize wait times.
