Choon Waterfall

Chosen as one of Japan’s top 100 pristine water sources.

 What is Choon Waterfall?

Nestled in the green mountains of Ukiha City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Choon Waterfall is a renowned cascade located within Chikugogawa Prefectural Natural Park. With pristine water plunging down a cliffside approximately 27 meters high and 9 meters wide, this beautiful waterfall has been cherished by locals since ancient times. It is said to have earned its name, which translates to “the waterfall of tuned sound,” because the roaring water resonates through the valley like a beautifully lingering piece of music. The surrounding area has been developed into Choon no Taki Park, making it a highly popular destination to escape the heat and experience the healing power of nature.

Highlights of Choon Waterfall

The biggest draw is the striking appearance of the waterfall itself, alongside the beautiful acoustic qualities that gave the site its name. The white water crashes down over massive boulders, kicking up a refreshing mist that creates a stunning contrast against the deep green surroundings. Surrounded by an abundance of negative ions, visitors can refresh both mind and body simply by listening closely to the soothing rush of the stream.

The area is also a spectacular place to experience the changing scenery of Japan’s four seasons—featuring cherry blossoms in spring, fresh verdant foliage in early summer, and vibrant leaves in autumn. Additionally, other waterfalls such as Uogaeri Waterfall and Sugabuchi Waterfall are scattered within the same park grounds, allowing visitors to enjoy a scenic waterfall-hopping trek through the rich natural landscape.

How to Enjoy Your Visit

Driving up the winding mountain roads from the center of Ukiha City, you will arrive at Choon no Taki Park, greeted by crisp, clean mountain air. Begin by taking a stroll along the walking paths to feel the cool mist as you approach the base of the falls. We highly recommend finding a seat on one of the benches near the plunge pool, where you can slow down and take in the scenery with the music of the rushing water as your background tracks.

The park becomes a bustling summer retreat for families looking to beat the heat. During the summer months, a unique “flowing water pool” that utilizes chilled natural mountain spring water opens up, allowing children to safely splash around and experience the great outdoors. Another massive summer highlight is Nagashi Somen (flowing somen noodles), where cold noodles are slid down bamboo flumes for guests to catch and eat. Enjoying these chilled noodles in the heart of nature is a classic seasonal experience that offers the ultimate refreshment on a hot day. This spot pairs perfectly with a weekend driving tour combined with Ukiha’s famous seasonal fruit picking or a tour of the town’s trendy cafes.
