Kunozan Toshogu is a historic shrine located on Mount Kuno in Shizuoka City. It was the first Toshogu shrine in Japan built to honor Tokugawa Ieyasu, the great leader who ended the warring states period. After Ieyasu passed away in 1616 at the age of 75, his will requested that his remains be laid to rest here. While the famous Nikko Toshogu was built later, Kunozan remains the spiritual foundation for the Tokugawa family. In 2010, the main hall and surrounding structures were designated as National Treasures. It is now a major power spot in Shizuoka where history fans and travelers come to feel the spiritual energy.
The biggest highlight is the Gongen-zukuri style architecture, which represents the peak of early Edo-period art. The buildings are covered in brilliant lacquer and vibrant colors that are truly breathtaking.
As you walk through, look closely at the incredibly detailed carvings. You will see mythical beasts like the baku (eaters of nightmares) which symbolize peace, as well as animals representing family love. Each carving was created by master craftsmen with deep symbolic meaning. Deep in the back of the shrine is the Shinbyo, the sacred tomb where Ieyasu rests. You can really feel the weight of history here. It has a natural stillness that makes the rest of the world feel miles away.
There are two main ways to reach the shrine, and each offers a very different experience.
The first is taking the Nihondaira Ropeway from the summit of Nihondaira, right near the Nihondaira Yume Terrace. It is only a 5-minute ride through the air, but you get incredible views of Suruga Bay and the dramatic cliffs. This is the best choice if you want to save your energy for exploring the shrine itself.
The second option is for those who want a bit of a challenge. You can climb the 1,159 stone steps from the foot of the mountain. In Japanese, the number 1,159 sounds like ichi-ichi-go-kuro-san, which is a fun play on the phrase for “thanks for your hard work.” As you climb the zigzagging path, the view of the ocean opens up behind you. Reaching the top after walking the same path as ancient samurai gives you a real sense of accomplishment. After your visit, be sure to stop by the Kunozan Toshogu Museum. It houses treasures like the famous gold armor worn by Ieyasu, as well as swords, personal items of the shoguns, and even a Western clock gifted by the King of Spain.
