Oshokujidokoro Mitsubatsutsuji no Ie

Enjoying soba paired with rainbow trout dishes.

What is Oshokujidokoro Mitsubatsutsuji no Ie

Oshokujidokoro Mitsubatsutsuji no Ie is a restaurant set in a renovated 150-year-old traditional Japanese home located in Inokashira, Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The historic property features a garden with a 600-year-old Mitsuba Tsutsuji (three-leaf azalea) tree designated as a Prefectural Natural Monument. The restaurant opened in October 2022 in response to requests from seasonal flower-viewing guests who wished to dine on the grounds.

Centered around a family whose maternal ancestral home is this historic house, the restaurant was entirely built by relatives who handled everything from menu creation and garden landscaping to constructing walkways and log benches. Although it has only been open for a short time, it is warmly embraced by locals as a welcoming community dining spot. Located near Lake Tanuki and Jinba Falls, it is a convenient and pleasant stop during sightseeing.

Highlights of Oshokujidokoro Mitsubatsutsuji no Ie

The main highlight is the wide variety of dishes made with rainbow trout, a famous local specialty of Fujinomiya, served alongside handmade buckwheat noodles (soba). The rainbow trout is raised in the spring waters of Inokashira, where water temperatures remain stable year-round thanks to Mount Fuji’s underground water. As a result, the fish has firm flesh and no unpleasant odor. Visitors can enjoy it in various ways, including sashimi, deep-fried cutlets, namerou (tartare-style dish), and oyako-don (trout and trout-roe bowl).

For the soba, guests can choose between two types: fragrant Inaka Soba (rustic buckwheat noodles ground with the husks) and smooth Nihachi Soba (80% buckwheat flour). Another delightful feature is the toppings of dropwort and watercress grown directly in the garden, allowing visitors to enjoy subtle seasonal variations in the menu.

Another delightful feature is being able to add toppings like dropwort and watercress grown right in the garden, making the subtle seasonal changes in the menu part of the fun.

How to Enjoy Your Visit

If coming from Lake Tanuki, take Prefectural Route 414. If coming from Asagiri Kogen or Yamanashi, take National Route 139 and turn left at the “Chikusanshikenjo-kita” intersection toward “Tanuki / County Trout Hatchery”. You will see promotional banners along the prefectural road marking the location. For parking, space at the local disaster prevention evacuation site is open to visitors, so please follow the local signs.

Recommended menu choices include set meals like the Nijimasu Gozen or the Nijimasu Bowl and Nihachi Soba Set, which combine soba with rainbow trout dishes. These rich set meals allow you to sample rainbow trout rice, carpaccio, and small side dishes all at once, making them perfect for first-time visitors. If you love wasabi, be sure to check out the Wasabi Don, where you can enjoy an entire freshly harvested local Inokashira wasabi root.

After your meal, taking a stroll through the garden is highly recommended. You can admire the natural monument Mitsuba Tsutsuji tree and, on clear days, enjoy views of Mount Fuji beyond the garden. The azalea blooming season in early spring is particularly busy, so visiting during off-peak times allows for a more relaxed experience.
