Akame 48 Waterfalls

A dedicated Japanese izakaya where you can savor local seasonal ingredients

Akame 48 Waterfalls are located in a valley in Akame-cho, Nabari City, Mie Prefecture. The area is a nature spot selected as one of the top 100 waterfalls and top 100 forest bathing areas in Japan. A 4km walking trail runs through the valley, letting visitors see many waterfalls of different sizes. At the entrance, you will find the Japan Salamander Center, where you can see the Japanese giant salamander, which is protected as a Special Natural Monument. Visitors come throughout the year to see the green leaves in spring, the changing colors in autumn, and the frozen waterfalls in winter.

Features

The main feature is the hiking trail that lets you walk right next to the waterfalls. Among them, the five main waterfalls of Akame, which are Fudo, Senju, Nunobiki, Ninai, and Biwa, are the most notable. Because the path is mostly flat and well-maintained, beginners and people who are not used to hiking can walk it safely. Listening to the sound of the river and birds while walking in the fresh air is a great way to relax your mind and body.

From vibrant spring greenery and autumn leaves to majestic frozen waterfalls in winter, you can enjoy a variety of stunning sights all year round!

Recommended Ways to Spend Time and Enjoy

To reach the valley entrance, take a local bus from Kintetsu Akameguchi Station for about 10 minutes to the final stop, followed by a 5-minute walk. Your journey begins at the Japan Salamander Center, which serves as both the main entry gate and a facility where you can observe adorable giant salamanders up close before starting your waterfall trail. The full hiking trail takes roughly 1.5 hours one way to the furthest point. You can easily turn back at any point based on your time and fitness level, allowing you to enjoy the walk at your own pace. Since certain sections of the path can be wet and slippery, sturdy sneakers or walking shoes and comfortable clothing are recommended.

Beyond the main hike, the surrounding area offers plenty of immersive activities. At Ninja Forest located near the base of the valley, visitors of all ages can try traditional Igaryu ninja training, including throwing ninja stars (shuriken) and crossing water with specialized gear (mizugumo). Seasonal highlights are also not to be missed, such as waterfall-under-shower eco-tours from summer to autumn, as well as romantic candle nights and evening illuminations during autumn and winter.

After working up a sweat on the trail, a great way to unwind is by enjoying a day trip hot spring bath at nearby facilities like Akame Onsen Kakure no Yu Taisenkaku. Soaking in natural hot spring waters while surrounded by nature offers deep relaxation. Combining scenic nature walks, ninja experiences, and hot springs makes for an exceptionally satisfying day trip destination.
