Located approximately 7 km north of central Asakura City at the foot of Mount Kosho (elevation: approx. 860 m), the town sits in a south-facing basin surrounded by mountains on three sides. Thanks to these geographical features, it developed as a highly defensible castle town. Having flourished until the early Meiji period, Akizuki was later bypassed by modern development due to events such as the Akizuki Rebellion and its location away from major transit routes. Fortuitously, this preserved its historic streetscape almost exactly as it was. Today, Akizuki Castle Town is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Out of 126 such districts nationwide, only four are recognized as castle towns—and Akizuki is unique among them, as the entire town was designated as a cohesive whole.
