One of Japan's Smallest, Beautiful Five-Storied Pagodas and National Treasure Buddhist Statues

Murou-ji Temple, located in Uda City, Nara Prefecture, is the grand head temple of the Shingon sect’s Murou-ji school. It is a historic temple also widely known as “Nyonin Koya” (Women’s Mount Koya) because, unlike many other strict mountain temples, it allowed women to worship there. Founded at the end of the Nara period, its quiet presence nestled in the lush, nature-rich mountains of Murou provides visitors with a deep sense of peace. The temple grounds stretch along a mountain stream, featuring a layout of Buddhist buildings that harmonizes beautifully with the seasonal nature. It is particularly famous for its rhododendrons in the spring and vibrant foliage in the autumn, having been beloved by many worshippers and tourists since ancient times. It is a precious spot where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city and simultaneously experience history and nature in complete tranquility.
The greatest charm of Murou-ji lies in the three-dimensional layout of its grounds—a unique characteristic of mountain temples—and its deep harmony with nature. Crossing the Taiko-bashi (drum bridge) at the entrance opens up a magical space surrounded by clear streams and ancient trees. The temple is structured so that you tour historical buildings like the Kondo (Golden Hall), Hondo (Main Hall), and the Five-Storied Pagoda as you climb the stone steps, allowing you to enjoy a different landscape with every step.
The outdoor Five-Storied Pagoda is especially noteworthy. Standing at a relatively modest height of about 16 meters, it is known as one of Japan’s smallest outdoor five-storied pagodas, and its graceful appearance is truly the symbol of Murou-ji Temple. Its form, blending perfectly with the surrounding trees, shows completely different expressions depending on the season. Additionally, the Kondo houses a group of National Treasure Buddhist statues, allowing you to experience Heian-period art up close.
Viewing these statues within such a quiet, serene atmosphere leaves visitors with a profound spiritual resonance.
The most common way to get there is by taking a bus from Kintetsu “Murouguchi-Ono Station,” allowing you to gaze at the mountain scenery along the way. As you approach the temple, the nature deepens, offering a sense of the extraordinary even before your visit begins. Once you arrive at the temple grounds, first enjoy taking photos near the Taiko-bashi bridge, and then slowly climb the stone steps to explore the various halls and pagodas.
The key is to stroll at a comfortable, unhurried pace. The morning hours are especially recommended, as there are fewer people, allowing you to relish a much quieter atmosphere. Spring brings blooming rhododendrons, and autumn offers stunning fall colors, creating a beautiful contrast between nature and architecture. With fresh greenery in summer and snowy landscapes in winter, the temple has distinct charms year-round, so visiting in different seasons is highly recommended. After paying your respects, taking a break at a teahouse near the temple gates to taste local specialties and light meals is another great joy of the trip. If you have the time, it is also highly recommended to stroll around the surrounding Murou area and take in the peaceful scenery of the traditional Japanese countryside (satoyama).
