Refreshing Highland Hiking

Soni Highlands, located in Soni Village, Uda District, Nara Prefecture, is one of the most prominent highland scenic spots in the Kansai region. Situated at an altitude of approximately 700 meters, it features gentle hills and vast fields of Japanese pampas grass (susuki), offering beautiful natural scenery throughout the seasons. It is particularly famous in autumn, when the pampas grass turns a shimmering golden hue, creating a mystical landscape that attracts many tourists and photography enthusiasts. The highlands are also home to “Okame-ike Pond,” which adds to the serene beauty of the area.
The main attraction is undoubtedly the expansive pampas grass fields. In autumn, the fluffy ears of the grass sway in the wind like golden waves, offering different expressions depending on the time of day. At sunset, the grass is illuminated by the fading light, creating a breathtaking golden glow. The area features well-maintained walking trails, making it ideal for casual hiking.
While autumn is the peak season, visitors can enjoy fresh greenery from spring to summer and occasional snow-covered landscapes in winter, making it a worthy destination year-round.
We recommend visiting in conjunction with sightseeing in the Uda area. It is especially popular as a lunch spot after visiting Murou-ji Temple. Upon arrival, be sure to check the daily specials or the lunch platter. The dishes made with seasonal ingredients have a soothing taste that will heal the fatigue of your travels. After your meal, enjoy a cup of coffee or dessert while relaxing. The tranquil atmosphere of the shop will make you forget the passage of time. It is also a perfect pit stop during a drive, where you can enjoy a peaceful moment alongside the lush, natural scenery. This cafe is perfect for those who want to enjoy a slow and relaxing journey.
