Hoshitoge Rice Terraces

Terraced Rice Fields Enveloped in a Mystical Water Mirror and Sea of Clouds.

What are Hoshitoge Rice Terraces?

Located in the hilly Matsudai area of Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture, Hoshitoge Rice Terraces feature around 200 rice paddies that spread across the slopes like shimmering fish scales.

In this snow-rich satoyama (mountain village), generations of farmers have preserved the terraced fields by working in harmony with the harsh natural environment. The breathtaking scenery has been passed down for over 300 years and was recognized in 2022 as part of Japan’s “Tsunagu Tanada Heritage” by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

While Tokamachi City is home to many terraced rice fields, Hoshitoge stands out as one of the most beloved, celebrated as one of the “100 Beautiful Villages of Japan.”

Highlights of the Hoshitoge Rice Terraces

At Hoshitoge Rice Terraces, water fills the paddies from the snowmelt season until the rice planting period, and again from late October until the first snowfall

During these times, the surface of the fields reflects the sky and surrounding landscape like a mirror, creating a stunning “water mirror” view.

In the early morning, mist often drifts through the mountains, forming a mystical sea of clouds. As the air chills at dawn, the scenery illuminated by the soft glow of sunrise and accompanied by birdsong offers a truly enchanting experience—one that draws many visitors seeking this moment of quiet beauty.

Unlike flatland rice fields, terraced paddies cannot draw water directly from rivers. The rice at Hoshitoge Rice Terraces is grown solely with snowmelt and rainwater—fields of this kind are known as Tensuiden, or “heaven-fed paddies.” Because they rely entirely on nature, securing enough water is often a challenge. Yet, the rice cultivated with such pure natural water has an exceptionally rich flavor.

How to Enjoy / Recommended Activities

If you plan to visit Hoshitoge Rice Terraces, the sunrise hours are especially recommended. From the viewing platform, you can watch the mist gradually lift and the terraces glow with the soft hues of dawn—an ever-changing landscape that feels alive with each passing moment.

From late April to before the rice planting season, and again from late October to November, the paddies are filled with water, creating a beautiful “water mirror” effect. In autumn, just before the harvest, the golden rice ears shine under the clear blue sky, offering a peaceful countryside view. However, during winter (mid-November to late April), the parking lot and viewing area are closed due to heavy snowfall, so it’s best to avoid visiting during that period.

Another excellent option is Yuki no Ie Furusawatei, a charming traditional kominka inn in Tokamachi City. This over-150-year-old farmhouse has been beautifully renovated while preserving its historic character. The owner, Akira Ibi, also serves as a guide for the Hoshitoge Rice Terraces trekking tours.
