Chikugogawa Onsen Kuwanoya is a long-established ryokan founded in 1970, located in the Chikugo River hot spring area along the middle reaches of the river. With 25 guest rooms, the inn enjoys a prime setting overlooking the expansive Chikugo River and the lush Mino Mountain Range. Although surrounded by tranquil nature, the ryokan offers convenient access. It is about a one-hour drive from central Fukuoka City, and just five minutes by complimentary shuttle from JR Chikugo-Oishi Station or the “Haki” highway bus stop (advance reservation required). Room

The guest rooms at Kuwanoya offer a calm and traditional Japanese atmosphere, with a total of 25 rooms available. From the windows, guests can take in sweeping views of the Chikugo River and the Mino Mountain Range, where the shimmering river and seasonally changing hills create a soothing backdrop.

Renovated in March 2023, the 10-tatami Japanese-modern room with beds blends traditional tatami flooring with the comfort of two Western-style beds. This thoughtfully designed space combines Japanese elegance with contemporary convenience. As you step into the room, you’re immediately greeted by panoramic views of the Chikugo River and the surrounding mountains. Sitting by the veranda and listening to the gentle sounds of the river and birdsong, it’s easy to forget the rush of everyday life and simply relax.

Additional room options include 10-tatami Japanese-style rooms (for up to five guests) and compact 6-tatami rooms (for up to two guests). The 6-tatami room is the most affordable option, making it ideal for solo travelers or business stays. All rooms are equipped with Wi-Fi, a refrigerator, yukata robes, and other essential amenities for a comfortable stay. Guests are also welcomed with local sweets, “Hanayuzen,” and complimentary bottled water.

Dinner and Breakfast

Dinner at Kuwanoya features an abundant kaiseki course highlighting local ingredients and the flavors of each season. The cuisine is crafted by Head Chef Katsuya Iwanaga, who was selected as a “Contemporary Master Craftsman” and awarded the prestigious Yellow Ribbon Medal of Honor in 2024. His dishes are celebrated for their elegant presentation and deeply satisfying flavors.

Guests can savor locally sourced specialties such as sukiyaki or grilled Kyushu wagyu beef, salt-grilled sweetfish from nearby Hita, and seasonal tempura assortments — all generously portioned and rooted in regional produce. Seasonal specialties, including a winter-only tiger pufferfish course and celebratory sea bream baked in a salt crust, are also highly regarded. Dinner is served either in a private dining room or in the guest room, ensuring a relaxed and intimate experience.

Breakfast is also served in-room, allowing guests to enjoy a leisurely start to the day in complete comfort. The traditional Japanese set meal is equally plentiful, centered around freshly steamed rice with free refills. Classic dishes such as grilled fish, tofu hot pot, and sunny-side-up eggs are accompanied by a variety of seasonal side dishes and pickles. Onsen

Kuwanoya’s greatest appeal lies in its 100% pure, free-flowing hot spring water, drawn directly from the source without any dilution or reheating. The alkaline simple spring is rich in radon and carries a faint hint of sulfur, giving the water a silky texture that has earned it a reputation as a “beauty bath.” Thanks to the abundant flow of fresh spring water, the baths are constantly replenished, and the facilities are thoroughly cleaned and refilled every night to ensure optimal hygiene.

Emerging at approximately 44°C (111°F), the spring water is naturally at an ideal bathing temperature. Unlike many hot springs, it does not require cooling in tanks and is delivered directly to the baths without prolonged exposure to air, preserving its exceptional freshness. Tiny bubbles in the mineral-rich water gently cling to the skin, while the smooth, velvety texture creates a soothing sensation. Guests often remark on how soft and hydrated their skin feels after bathing.

Three distinct bathing areas are available. The large communal baths and open-air baths, separated by gender, overlook the flowing Chikugo River. While soaking, guests can listen to the gentle sound of the river and birdsong, surrounded by seasonal scenery that enhances the sense of relaxation. The women’s open-air bath adjoins the main bath, while the men’s is located in a separate building — both offering beautiful river views.

For added privacy, a reservable family bath is available free of charge for overnight guests and day-use dining visitors. The main baths and open-air baths are open from 6:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and the private family bath is available until 10:00 p.m. Whether enjoying a refreshing morning soak in the crisp air or a leisurely evening bath, guests can experience the rejuvenating waters at their own pace throughout their stay.

Get off at Chikugo-Yoshii Station on the JR Kyudai Main Line.
