Ryuketsu Shrine

Satoyama Pilgrimage” — Journeying from Murō-ji to the Dragon Cave

 About Ryuketsu Shrine

Ryuketsu Shrine, situated in Murou, Uda City, Nara Prefecture, is an ancient shrine known for its deeply rooted nature worship and mystical atmosphere. In the mountains spreading behind the shrine lies a legendary sacred site called “Kissho Ryuketsu” (Auspicious Dragon Cave), which has been revered since ancient times as the dwelling place of a dragon deity. This site has been highly valued as a place of prayer for rain and bountiful harvests, and it is said that during the Heian period, the Imperial Court also recognized it as a sacred place for rain-making prayers. Even today, a solemn atmosphere pervades the area, as if nature itself is the object of worship, making visitors feel a profound sense of tranquility and mystery.

Highlights of Ryuketsu Shrine

The greatest charm of Ryuketsu Shrine is its sense of unity with nature, with minimal artificial decoration. The shrine grounds are surrounded by mountains and clear streams, and you can feel a sacredness that seems to change the very air the moment you pass through the torii gate.

Particularly noteworthy is the “Kissho Ryuketsu” located deep within the shrine. Although you cannot enter it directly, its existence itself is an object of worship, passing down a form of nature worship from ancient times to the present. Surrounded by rocky surfaces and dense forests, the area truly possesses an atmosphere worthy of being called a “power spot.” Additionally, the natural beauty found throughout, such as the clear streams flowing through the grounds and the moss-covered stone steps, is another highlight.

The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons, and particularly during the fresh greenery of summer and the changing foliage of autumn, a magical landscape unfolds.

How to Enjoy Your Visit

It is recommended to take a bus heading toward Murou from Kintetsu “Murouguchi-Ono Station” and enjoy the idyllic mountain village scenery on your way. Murou-ji Temple is also nearby, and visiting both together will make for a more fulfilling sightseeing experience.

When paying your respects, try to walk quietly through the grounds and listen closely to the sounds of nature. The sound of the wind and the babbling of the water will help you forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life. While taking photos is appealing, feeling the atmosphere with all five senses is the best way to enjoy this place. Moreover, visiting during less crowded times, such as the morning or evening, allows you to experience an even more mystical atmosphere. While it is not a flashy tourist facility, it is a highly recommended spot for those who want to calm their minds or connect with nature.
