Mukashi Inaka Taiken Suishamura

Experience authentic traditional culture in a 250-year-old thatched-roof farmhouse.

What is Mukashi Inaka Taiken Suishamura?

Mukashi Inaka Taiken Suishamura is a hands-on countryside retreat in the deep green valleys of the Setoya district in Fujieda City, Shizuoka. Once you cross the small suspension bridge over the clear Takinotani River, a 250-year-old thatched-roof farmhouse and a handmade waterwheel spinning with a steady rhythm appear before you.

It feels as though you’ve stepped into a Japanese folktale or a Studio Ghibli film. In this timeless landscape that feels like the heart of old Japan, you can step away from modern conveniences and fully experience Satoyama. This is a traditional way of life where the village and the mountains exist in a sustainable loop, moving in harmony with the seasons.

Highlights

The main charm of Suishamura is that you don’t just look at the scenery; you use your own hands and body to experience the basics of living. It is the exact opposite of modern life where everything is done with the flip of a switch.

Here, you can experience a lifestyle that takes time and effort. You might swing a heavy axe to split firewood, start a fire in a traditional clay kamado stove, and cook rice while squinting through the smoke. There is a special kind of moving experience found in the sweetness of freshly cooked rice and meals enjoyed around an open irori hearth. It is a feeling you can never find in the city.

It is the perfect spot for adults who want a digital detox or families who want to teach their children about the value of nature and food.

Recommended Ways to Spend Your Time

Suishamura is about a 20 to 30-minute drive from the Shimada-Kanaya IC on the Shin-Tomei Expressway or the Fujieda Bypass. You will find it just beyond the mountain roads. Since it is entirely reservation-based, be sure to book your visit in advance.

The most popular option is the Half-Day Experience Plan, which is perfect for families and groups. The day starts with everyone cooperating to split firewood. Afterward, you can try catching swift yamame (mountain trout) with your bare hands in the clear river nearby (depending on the season). You’ll skewer the trout yourself and grill them over the charcoal of the hearth while the rice cooks on the stove. Tucking into the trout, local vegetables, and fresh rice while listening to the crackling wood is a moment of pure bliss.

You can also add optional activities like bathing in a goemonburo (a traditional iron kettle bath), which is rare even in the Oi River region, or trying nagashi somen (flowing noodles) and milling rice with the waterwheel. Stoking the fire to get the bath temperature just right is an exciting experience that makes both children and adults feel like kids again. While you cannot stay inside the old farmhouse overnight, there is a Tent Site Stay Plan where you can bring your own tent to the garden area. Sleeping under a star-filled sky with the sound of the river as your background music is the ultimate outdoor experience.
